The idea of telephone recording is one that has been heavily publicized occasionally. There are strict legal barriers against anyone who makes an attempt to record a phone conversation without a warrant, as this is considered a violation of privacy. For the govt to record a telephone conversation, they have to get a warrant. In order to get such a warrant, they need to show a judge that there is reasonable suspicion that a crime is being committed, and the folks that would be recorded are somehow involved in that crime. Without this, most judges won't issue a warrant for a telephone “tap.”
If a phone is tapped by the government, there's typically some kind of telephone recording device on the telephone itself or the wire outside. These devices may also be installed a short distance away at the nearest telefone transmitter station.
Cellular telephones are sometimes less complicated for central authority investigators to record chats on when they have a warrant. They have to pick up the express frequency of the telephone, then simply record the conversation from that frequency. This is simpler on some phones than others, dependent on how technologically advanced the phone and it’s network are. Some older phones with weak antennas and archaic networks may even incidentally be able to be picked up by short wave radios. This is typically the result of frequencies intercepting each other unintentionally. Such a problem is decreasing nowadays , as cellular phone makers develop paths to protect wireless signals from the ears of others who may need to listen in on someone's conversation.
Telephone recording devices are often not available in shops, since recording a chat without the awareness of both parties is unlawful. Not a lot of people wish to record their telephone chats, so there is not very much of a market for manufacturers to sell such products to. There could be some pieces of such recording equipment online, as some PI's use it when interrogating folks about cases. They need to ensure that they ask authorization of the other person on tape if it is OK to record the conversation. If it isn't, the conversation can't legally be taped.
Of course, answerphone messages are taped, but these are not a chat between 2 folk. They're simply one individual reciting a message into a machine. There is also generally known that when you leave a message on an ansaphone, it might not be rubbed out straight away. Anybody leaving a message should be aware that some messages are saved on machines for a long time. Dependent on the sort of machine, it may be easier for the owner of that machine to just keep messages on the machine than erase every one individually. Ansaphones with old cassette tapes are an instance of this, since the tape is routinely just rewound and recorded over after it is utilized. Over the course of time the standard of the recording can become poor due to the number of times the tape has been recorded over. These tapes are usually replaced quite cheaply.
